Below you will find answers to our most Frequently Asked Questions about TSTT's High Speed Access.
Choose from the topics below to find out more:
Yes. You require a username and password to get connected to TSTT High Speed Internet service. This is obtained from the customer service representative when you register for our High Speed Internet service.
No. TSTT High Speed Internet service is separate and apart from the NetXpress dial-up service, therefore usernames and passwords are specific to each service. However, if you are discontinuing your dial-up service you can use the existing username and password with the TSTT High Speed Internet service.
All High Speed Internet customers are provided with one (1) FREE mailbox account. However, a customer with an existing TSTT dial-up e-mail address, can also access this mailbox using his TSTT High Speed Internet service. Hence although a TSTT dial-up and High Speed Internet customer will have two (2) mailboxes, he can chose to use either, only one (1) or both of the mailboxes.
No. All TSTT High Speed Internet customers are offered a bundled package that includes an Internet connection and services from TSTT.
Yes. A customer can change his TSTT High Speed Internet package to a higher or lower speed, or to one that has a dynamic or static IP address. A customer can call or walk in to TSTT's customer service offices, and a service representative will process the application for a change in the High Speed Internet package.
TSTT High Speed Internet provides one (1) IP address. If you intend to run host services (e.g. run a web server, e-mail server, game server or ftp server), you will have to purchase the High Speed Internet package with a static IP address. If several users / PC stations will be sharing a single High Speed Internet connection, you will need to network your PCs.
Yes. You will have to use a static IP address and all server equipment will have to be set up and managed by you. With a static IP address, you can do great things that you can't do with a dynamic IP address, such as:
- Host your web pages on your own computer.
- Host your own e-mail server.
- Host your own FTP site.
- Host your own game server.
- Access a corporate network and work from home.
- Use third-party software to work remotely over a virtual private network (VPN).
YES! TSTT will be providing VPN services early in 2003. A customer may also use a static IP address and any off-the-shelf VPN software, which he will set up and manage himself.
All Internet users are at risk from Internet hackers. However, the risk increases for a TSTT High Speed Internet customer due to the faster Internet access he has, as well as the always-on connection of the ADSL service. Typically hackers will look for open doors into a customer's PC / network. Although it is beyond the scope of this FAQ to describe the process of securing a PC or network, it is of utmost importance to leave few doors and windows open to hackers.
TSTT employs several techniques to protect our High Speed Internet customers from attacks. TSTT uses a dynamic IP address allocation to automatically assign each customer a new IP address whenever customers reconnect to our High Speed Internet service. This is done transparently and does not require any intervention from the customer. It is harder for a "hacker" to "find" a particular customer if he or she constantly uses a different IP address. TSTT recommends that every customer log-off our High Speed Internet service when it is not being used, so that a new IP address is assigned at the next logon to the service.
TSTT also offers as part of its High Speed Internet service, a firewall to all of its ADSL customers. This ensures that all High Speed Internet customers have this added measure of protection for their service. Firewalls help control access to customers' systems, but understand that they are limited as a network solution. e-mail trojans for example can bypass most firewalls
