Saturday’s programme is expected to be a tightly-contested affair as multiple winners from over the years are expected to contest for the coveted 2019 prize.
Two-time 90.5 Annual Kite Flying Contest premier division winner, Alexander Ramoutar, has already completed his aeronautic masterpiece and is goal-bound on capturing a hat-trick of titles at this year’s competition.
After soaring to victory with his famous ‘Mad Bull’ in 2016 & 2017, the 28-year old experienced kite-maker was unable to participate at last year’s edition due to a medical emergency. However, Ramoutar has since fully recovered from his minor setback and eagerly awaits his return to the highly anticipated event.
“My work of art is completed,” said Ramoutar with a smile. “This year, I have done something special for the 20th anniversary. The vision I originally had for this kite, I must say, I’ve exceeded it. I believe my kite is going to turn a lot of heads. I’ve worked on it for about three months and I’m ready to out there and showcase the traditional art-form of Trinidad and Tobago which is kite-flying.”
Ramoutar’s involvement in kite-making started out alongside his famed uncle dubbed, ‘The Kite Man from Marabella’. After attending the 90.5 Event with his uncle many years ago, his interest in the art-form grew significantly.
Although he was unable to compete in 2018, the skilful builder still managed to construct a kite for his aunt, Marilyn Tambie, which eventually soared to top honours in the ‘Most Colourful’ division. This year, Ramoutar goes for his third triumph in the 90.5 category while his aunt begins defence of her crown. Additionally, Ramoutar’s cousin, Justin Tambie, lines up to contest a new division – ‘Best Chee Zees’ kite.
Thrilled to be celebrating this milestone, Kiran Maharaj, Managing Director of Caribbean Lifestyle Communications stated, “It is an honour to know that The People's Station Radio 90.5FM hosts the biggest family event on T&T's calendar. This brings together generations, families, friends and communities and encourages spending quality time through a fun-filled activity. Being here for 20 years with people who have literally grown up on the event is fulfilling and we thank all of our supporters and sponsors who make this event a success year after year.”
On Saturday, prizes will be awarded for the ‘Best Mad Bull’, ‘Best Box Kite’, ‘Best Cheekie Chong, ‘Most Innovative Design’ and ‘Best Newsday Kite’. There will also be live entertainment and giveaways courtesy the 2019 sponsors.
