The quiet northeastern village of Glamorgan in Tobago is undergoing a steady transformation, driven by community-led initiatives such as the Glamorgan Youth Foundation Regatta and supported by organizations like bmobile that are investing in sustainable development at the grassroots level.
Now in its third year and bolstered by support from bmobile, the river regatta has evolved into a unique blend of sport tourism and community engagement, backed by Glamorgan’s natural and historical assets. Held recently along one of the island’s longest waterways, the Great Dog River and the scenic Richmond Bay, the now-annual event features a combination of activities you will not find at any other location on the sister isle.
A team-based triathlon, followed by an obstacle course and a built-on-site bamboo raft race, highlighted the Glamorgan Youth Foundation’s (GYF) daily competitive events. Teams accumulated points across all divisions, which resulted in Hybrid Stallions claiming top honours. Rowing into runner-up spot were regatta debutants Southern Sailing Academy of Trinidad and Tobago, with V-Bez Nation coming in third, and Asphalt Army fourth. GYF president Joel Dann said the regatta serves as a sporting and cultural attraction and is also a strategic initiative to position Glamorgan as a key player in Tobago’s eco-tourism vision.
“We are trying to keep everything as eco-friendly as possible,” Dann stated. “We are currently wrapping up a project with the Caribbean Natural Resource Institute. The objective of that project is the protection and enhancement of the coastal environment at Richmond Bay. We’re planting trees, restoring grass where erosion takes place, and adding topsoil. Bmobile significantly adds to that as we’re continuing to build our community tourism product.” With increased patronage and participation in the 2026 edition, the GYF regatta celebrated innovation and teamwork while reinforcing its eco-friendly ethos.
Glamorgan’s appeal also lies in its rich combination of ecological and historical attractions. The area boasts access to the sea, river systems, waterfalls, and coastal environments, alongside historical landmarks such as Richmond Great House, African burial sites, and remnants from the 1959 filming of The Swiss Family Robinson at nearby Richmond Bay. Despite these resources, the community remained dormant for years until the GYF launched their first regatta in 2022. To date, the GYF has created a platform that promotes positive youth involvement while driving economic and social development.
bmobile’s continued support has been instrumental in advancing the foundation’s goal. The digital communications provider is no stranger to protecting and conserving Trinidad and Tobago’s waterways, having played an active role in the International Coastal Cleanup for more than a decade.
“What we are seeing in Glamorgan is a community taking ownership of its natural assets and building something sustainable around it,” said Onica Blackman, bmobile’s Country Operations Manager, Tobago.
“At bmobile, we are intentional about supporting initiatives that go beyond a single event. This is about long-term community development, youth engagement and creating economic opportunity in spaces that have traditionally been overlooked,” she continued.
The regatta, though, is part of a broader calendar of activities organized by the GYF, including outreach programmes and collaborative initiatives with groups such as No Youth Left Behind. The GYF also hosted interfaith events such as its annual Gospel Block, aimed at engaging diverse segments of the community.
Additionally, this year’s regatta attracted significant interest from groups and clubs across Trinidad, signaling its growing national appeal. Dann confirmed that the GYF is currently in discussions with the Southern Sailing Academy to potentially introduce small sailboat racing to the programme in 2027. The event also welcomed Trinidad and Tobago Dragon Boat Federation president Keith Dalip, whose
attendance marks a step toward further expanding the regatta’s offerings, with dragon boat racing among the activities being explored for future editions.
Since the inception of the regatta, the impact has allowed for increased visitor traffic to Glamorgan, which highlights the growing need for improved infrastructure, including basic amenities such as bathrooms and beach facilities. Despite these challenges, the Foundation has relied on volunteerism and community support to drive its initiative forward. Looking ahead, the organization plans to engage key stakeholders, including the Tobago House of Assembly, to explore opportunities for sustainable development and investment in the area.
With growing interest, strategic partnerships, and a dedicated team behind it, the GYF Regatta is well on its way to becoming a staple on Tobago’s annual calendar of events, alongside established attractions such as the Blue Food Festival and Goat Racing at Buccoo. As interest continues to grow, initiatives like the Glamorgan Youth Foundation Regatta highlight the potential of community-driven development and the role partnerships can play in unlocking that potential. For bmobile, it represents a continued commitment to supporting initiatives that create meaningful opportunities while preserving the natural and cultural identity of communities across Trinidad and Tobago.
