Aspiring local track and field athletes have praised the developmental and career-building opportunities offered by the inaugural Keshorn Walcott Golden League Athletics Grass Series. The six-stage series culminated at the Diego Martin Sporting Complex on March 9, featuring the nation’s top-flight track and field prospects competing for top honours in various disciplines.
Supported by the nation’s leading communications solutions provider, bmobile, the meet served as a vital platform for athletes to showcase their skills, gain competitive experience, and track their progress over the four-month period.
Keshorn Walcott, Trinidad and Tobago’s two-time (2012, 2016) Olympic men’s javelin medallist, described the nationwide event as a premier athletics series dedicated to fostering talent and advancing athletic development in the twin-island republic.
The Toco native is also a longstanding bmobile endorsee, and over the years, they have collaborated on multiple projects designed to create opportunities for young athletes, nurturing the next generation—who are inevitably our future.
Walcott’s most recent venture, supported by bmobile, offered young track and field athletes a chance to focus on their growth, with structured events, high-level competition, and exposure to professional standards, ensuring they are fully prepared to excel in their disciplines.
Anjanie Ramesar-Soom, of the Corporate, Environmental, Social & Reputation Management team at bmobile, emphasized the company’s dedication to sports development and youth empowerment:
“At bmobile, we understand the transformative power of sports, shaping not only the careers of individual athletes but also the future of our communities. Our longstanding partnership with Keshorn Walcott reflects our commitment to creating impactful platforms that inspire young talent and foster growth in the sport of athletics. Through initiatives like the Golden League Series, we continue to support the development of Trinidad and Tobago’s next generation of track and field stars, positioning them for success both locally and internationally.”Ramesar-Soom reaffirmed the company’s commitment to providing a platform for promising athletes to continue developing their craft, with the long-term goal of cultivating the nation’s future track and field champions.
“We’re proud to partner with Keshorn Walcott to help nurture the next generation of track and field champions,” said Ramesar-Soom.Walcott took his athletics series to six communities throughout Trinidad and Tobago, allowing various districts to host and have their domestic clubs compete on home soil against visiting track and field clubs.
The first event took place at Eddie Hart Grounds in Tacarigua (December 7), followed by Mahaica Sporting Complex in Point Fortin (January 11), Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago (January 26), Walcott’s home base in Toco (February 15), and the final two legs at Diego Martin Sporting Complex (February 22 and March 9).
Walcott’s ultimate goal is for athletes from domestic clubs to use the series to monitor their performance over time, identifying areas for improvement and delivering better performances at each stage of the league.
Head coach of Point Fortin New Jets, Earl McCree, expressed satisfaction with Walcott’s athletics series, describing it as a platform for athletes to gauge their progress through competition.
McCree also welcomed the timing of the Golden League.“This competition is very important because, in past years, we had a lot of athletic meets taking place around this time,” he said. “What we’ve been lacking is consistent competition. The Golden League is a godsend, as athletes don’t train just to run into top form—they compete to get there. With fewer meets now, the Golden League fills a vital gap for athletes to monitor their progress ahead of regional and international meets.”
Walcott stated that the series would help better prepare athletes for upcoming events like the CARIFTA Games and the Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships.
bmobile is also a frequent partner within the track and field community, having annually supported events such as the Victoria Education District Sports Association Games and other key meets like the Tobago Falcon Games and National Track and Field Championships.
Walcott praised the premier communications solutions provider for their ongoing commitment to creating opportunities for Trinidad and Tobago’s rising track and field stars.
“Without the sponsors, the meet wouldn’t have been possible. As always, I’m thankful for bmobile sticking by my side. We’ve been planning this initiative for some time now, and it’s a great one for us going forward. The athletes are looking forward to what is to come,” said the two-time Olympic medallist.
Sprinter Zada Charles, 15, who claimed several wins in the 100m and 200m events across the six stages, said the games inspired her to work harder as she targets CARIFTA qualification.
“It’s very good because we, as athletes, would have had no other time to run professionally without these games. I’m happy that Keshorn has brought this for us to get better at our craft. I’m working on my starts and plan to put in more hard work and training time,” she said.
Additionally, male sprinter Zuriel Edwards, 21, is aiming for qualification for this year’s North America, Central America, and Caribbean (NACAC) Championships, and believes the Golden League gives him another chance to sharpen up ahead of a busy season.
“It’s a great initiative. Taking sports into the communities and involving them helps with the development of the youth. I like how I can measure my progress with the different stages. We have a long season ahead, so we must seize these opportunities to get better. I want to get as fast as possible,” he said.
