In a sustained commitment to environmental stewardship, over 100 volunteers, led by bmobile, journeyed to the scenic Blanchisseuse coastline to cleanup Marianne Bay. This year marks over a decade of bmobile’s involvement in the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) efforts, reaffirming the company’s dedication to environmental sustainability and corporate social responsibility.
bmobile’s volunteers were joined by AMPLIA, Rotaract Aranguez, Scouts, and Rystad Energy, with logistical support from the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation (TPRC) and the office of the Member of Parliament for Arima, the Honourable Pennelope Beckles. Together, they gathered over 300 pounds of waste, including plastics, fishing gear, and non-biodegradable materials that pose serious risks to marine life and coastal ecosystems.
The ICC, led globally by the Ocean Conservancy, is the world’s largest volunteer effort to clean the oceans and protect waterways. This year’s theme, “Clean Seas for Blue Economy,” calls for sustainable practices that go beyond cleanups, encouraging communities to embrace long-term behavioral changes that reduce pollution at the source.
Anjanie Ramesar-Soom, from bmobile’s Corporate, Environmental, Social & Reputation Management team, emphasized the company’s leadership in sustainability.
“bmobile has proudly participated in the ICC for over 10 years. This initiative is a cornerstone of our commitment to the environment and to inspiring meaningful change. By involving our employees and communities, we are taking concrete steps toward a cleaner, healthier future for Trinidad and Tobago,” Ramesar-Soom said.
She added that the cleanup also promotes team building and a sense of purpose among employees.
“Our volunteers gain a deeper connection to the community and leave with a sense of pride and accomplishment. This kind of involvement strengthens our bond with the public while reinforcing our responsibility to protect the environment.”
The support provided by the TPRC and the MP’s office was vital in ensuring the collected waste was disposed of responsibly. TPRC Chairman, Councillor Josiah Austin, and Blanchisseuse/Santa Rosa Councillor Roger Moore both praised the initiative.
“Collaborating with bmobile allows us to make a tangible difference. By working together, we’re not just removing trash—we’re promoting better waste management practices for the long term,” said Councillor Moore.
Over the past decade, bmobile has been a consistent partner in the ICC, contributing to the removal of 5,000 pounds of waste from coastlines nationwide. This ongoing involvement underscores the company’s leadership in promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility across Trinidad and Tobago.
Trinidad and Tobago’s participation in the ICC is organized by the country’s coordinators, Caribbean Network for Integrated Rural Development (CNIRD). CNIRD Executive Director Marissa Mohammed also commended bmobile’s steadfast commitment to the cause.
“To this end, the ICC TT initiative needs partnerships with our corporate community like the one we share with bmobile for five-plus years and many other like-minded stakeholders,” Mohammed said.
“We are truly amazed by how our network continues to show up and support each other for the common good of cleaner and healthier waterways. We look forward to continuing to build our collaborations and synergies in stemming the tide of marine litter in T&T.”
